Building a Stupa

Assemble a tower for Buddha and watch it fall

I stack stones carefully
finding their centers of gravity
the lump of one fitting the nook of another
building a precarious tower in the grass
near the flowering purple plum
under a clear sky with a breeze
catching the nape of my neck
mussing my gray crown of hair
as dad once did with his hand
reaching across the seat
as we drove somewhere
