DOING NOTHING

Lying poolside
in half a trance
life surrounds me---
whoops, yells, and laughter
of children playing in the water.

There is life in emptiness.

While reading a teaching
which reminds me to remember death
with every inhale and exhale
a small child cavorts
and cannon balls into the water
with immeasurable exhilaration.

Immerse yourself in life.

One wall of the pool
has an insipid mural
of a seascape painted on it---
sand, birds, breaking waves, a beach ball.
In my trance I think
How beautiful!

Death’s companionship
elevates me
heightens my awareness.
I do nothing
savoring the experience
like the last mouthful
of a fine meal.
