Becky Jaffe

The atom is mostly empty space
the human body mostly water
the universe more void than form
the matter we perceive as substance
more absence than presence

True to form, you
are more echo than sound
more aftershock than shudder
the afterglow from your embers radiates into
nothing

Becky Jaffe is an ardent admirer of grasshoppers, lichen, opossums, and the infinite permutations of DNA. This is her first poem.
